I Won't Learn from You
This reading totally gave me a different outlook on learning. It taught me that you can learn, even when refusing to learn. In this essay a man refused to learn his family's native language Yiddish. When he would hear his family talking in Yiddish he would starting counting to himself or starting talking in English so he wouldn't remember any of the words. Its possible to do that with any kind of learning. If you strongly believe in something then you can chose if you want to learn. There is also a story in I won't Learn from You about a little boy who would never read and didn't want to read. He seemed like a very angry little boy. One day the teacher whispered a sentence in a book and told the little boy to say it out loud to the class. And then he yelled "I told you I knew how to read!" After that he proceeded to learn how to read and felt more motivated. Reading that truly gave me a different perspective on learning.
My First Portfolio Grade
When I first looked at my portfolio grade I was some what surprised. I got a C-. I thought that I did a lot better on it. But then after I spoke with my classmates and looked at some of their work I realized that I only did satisfactory work. It gave me determination to do better in my writing. I do not like getting a little bit below average grades. I do not like getting letter grades for writing, but I do see why it is necessary. Overall I am definitely going to try and do better on my next portfolio projects and also all my writing to come! : )

Portfolio
I can't believe that this class is almost over. I am currently working on my portfolio. I really hope that I get a good grade in this course. I thought all of the assignments were very interesting and fun to write about so far. It's basically all opinion papers. This class has taught me so many different things that I never really questioned before. I'm happy to know that now I look at everything in different points of view. This class has broadened my horizons in a way.

Technology and School
I thought that the movie our class watched was very informational. It makes you wonder how much technology really means to America. To see students say "This lab top is so expensive and I don't even use it for school." It was kind of sad in a way how much money people spend on things and don't even use them. It was also saying how many tests they have to take and that one student pays for class but is never there. It's basically questioning if school is always the answer, and if it worth the time. I am not doubting people that want an education, I think that's awesome. But if your going to go to school and not do anything and wasting money, what's the point?

Binta and The Great Idea
1) Yes it surprised me. I would never think of someone in a 3rd world country adopting a child from America. I would think it would be the other way around. So Americans can help that child to have a better life.
2) His idea was to adopt a child from America. I think that that idea might turn out okay. But I don't think it would ever be allowed. Why would you want to bring a child from a great country to a country that is the poorest of the poor?
3) Soda's father does not want her to go to school because he thinks a women's place is at home to do the cooking and cleaning. He does not think that women should be educated. Soda wants to learn like everyone else. Her mother does not want her to be penalized when she is older because she has no education.
4) I think that if their society takes on (tubab) then they would not have the bond and the respect that those people have towards each other. They are all a very close community. Probably more than most people could say in America.
5) Western people might learn to be more loving towards each other and have more respect. They do not have many things to fight about. Americans seem to fight about everything and are very greedy.
6) If they had a more upgraded form of teaching and the technology that America has they probably wouldn't be as poor as they are.
7) This film reminds me of how much American people take school for granted. People in Senegal beg their parents to go to school so they can learn and have an education. Most children in America are lazy and ask their parents to stay home from school. Americans do not realize how important it is to go to school.

Freewriting
I am Gina Ponziano. I am eighteen years old. I live in Worth, IL. I am currently a full time student at Moraine Valley. I am not sure what I would like to major in. I want to explore my options. I was thinking about maybe a career having to do with counseling. I have a six month year old Pitbull. Her name is Bella. She is grey all over and has white paws and a white stomach. I got in a horrible car a year ago from today actually. I fractured my back in four different places. I was hospitalized for two weeks at Christ.I was home-schooled for about two months. It was a difficult experience for me, it being my senior year of High School. I am here at Moraine because I need a career in order to be succesful in life. I think I wrote some of these things because they are always on my mind. I hope I get use to this school so I can enjoy coming here and finally make a decison on what kind of career I would like to be in. Something that benefits me financially and something I will enjoy. I hope to have a wonderful experience here.
